The film was originally set in Busan, South Korea, but was changed to Hiroshima, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is based on the short story of the same name by Haruki Murakami from his 2014 short story collection, Men Without Women. The 2021 Japanese drama film directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who co-wrote the script with Takamasa Oe. Reika Kirishima as Oto Kafuku, Kafuku's Wife. She returns to the parking lot and gets into a bright-red car, where a dog waits for her in the back seat. As a coda, Watari, now bright-clad and relaxed, shops for groceries at a supermarket in South Korea. They then return to Hiroshima, where Kafuku assumes the role of Vanya and gives an impassioned performance before a live audience. They comfort each other, with Kafuku saying they have to go on living. Kafuku also expresses deep sorrow for not returning home earlier on the night his wife died. When after an exhausting journey they arrive at the collapsed ruins of her childhood home, Watari reveals that her mother was emotionally and physically abusive, and that she had the opportunity to save her mother from the wreckage but chose not to, which she intensely regrets. Kafuku asks Watari if she will take him to the place where her family died. The theater programmers press Kafuku to step into the role of Vanya. Some time later, the police arrive at a rehearsal and arrest Takatsuki for killing another man who was taking pictures of him. Takatsuki expresses admiration for her writing, and shares a story she told him that Kafuku had never heard the ending to before. Takatsuki's erratic behavior concerns Kafuku, as he witnesses the young man assaulting someone for taking pictures of him.During a late-night drive with Takatsuki, Kafuku reveals that he knew of his wife's affairs but did not say anything because he was afraid of losing her. Takatsuki asks Kafuku to meet with him after-hours to talk, but Kafuku is hesitant to speak in-depth with him. The early rehearsals are awkward because of the language difficulties, and when asked for specific direction on the scenes Kafuku only tells his actors to stick to the text. Kafuku auditions many actors for the play in a variety of languages (for example the woman who acts Sonya is mute, so can use only sign language) and casts Takatsuki in the lead role despite his young age. The theater company requires that he be accompanied by a driver, Misaki Watari, 23 he objects at first, possessive of his bright-red car, but relents after a test drive reveals Watari is a skilled driver. Two years later, Kafuku accepts a two-month residency with a theater program in Hiroshima, where he will direct a multi-lingual adaptation of Chekhov's play Uncle Vanya. Yūsuke Kafuku sees Kōji Takatsuki at her funeral, and guesses the young actor was his wife's lover. One day Yūsuke comes home to find Oto collapsed on the floor, dead from a brain haemorrhage.
