Need to buy parts for this project? The seats on the Mercedes W210 cars have no provision for manual adjustment. Everything is controlled by electric motors in the seat.
The steering wheel position is also controlled by the switch on the driver's side door panel. On our project car, the steering wheel adjustment simply stopped working one day. At the same time, the functions on the switch somehow became reversed.
When you pressed forward on the switch, the seat moved backward. Press backward and the seat moved forward. This can be caused by few different things. In the event that the functions become reversed or stop working, first try pushing the switch forward and holding it there for around ten seconds. This will cause the system to 'relearn' the stop positions for the seat.If this doesn't work, you can also try looking under both the driver's and passenger seats. You'll see an electrical harness going into each seat.
Slide the plastic locking tab over to detach the harness from the seat control module under each seat. Pull the harness out and check the electrical connections inside for any corrosion. Sometimes a spilled drink can leave a sticky residue on there or prevent the circuit from making contact. If so, clean the switch and reseat it into the seat module. Turn the ignition on and check to see if all of the seat controls now work.Sometimes, re-seating the electrical cables and moving the switches to full stop has no effect on the operation of the switch.
In these cases, the last thing to try is re-flowing the solder joints on the circuit board. I have heard of situations where living near the ocean causes salt air to corrode the connections inside the switch. The corrosion from the salt air tends to weaken the solder joints on the boards, causing the connections to lose electrical continuity. At the very least, trying this might make the switch work again. If not, there is probably a fault in one or more of the various electronic components on the board.
If you're really electronically savvy, you can test each circuit track for continuity and start testing each individual component on the board. If the switch still doesn't operate the seats correctly after all of this, it probably needs to be replaced. New seat switches are available. There are two different types available based on the chassis number of your car. Sometime during production, the electrical harness to the seat switch changed, so make sure you check before ordering.
Remember that electrical items are usually not returnable. Figure 2Shown here is the wiring harness that plugs into the control module under each front seat. Reseating these connections can sometimes reset the seat module and the switch will start working again. Slide the plastic locking tab to the side to release the harness from the module. Re-insert the harness into the module, slide the locking tab to secure the harness and turn the ignition on. Check if the switch works now. If it doesn't, you'll need to remove the door panel to access the seat adjustment switch itself.
Figure 17Now comes the tricky part. If you have electronics experience, you'll want to try and reflow all of the solder connections on the back of the board like shown here. The idea is to heat up each solder connection with a low-wattage soldering iron until the solder melts.
As it melts, it will re-flow into the joint between the circuit board and the various electronics on the other side of the board. Take your time and be sure to hit each solder joint. Once finished, plug the electrical harness back into the switch and see if it works. If it does, you just saved yourself some money. If not, something in the switch itself is faulty and you'll need to order a new switch assembly. Best bet is to access the motor, then check f power and ground are being sent when the switch is pressed. Nick at Pelican PartsDavidComments: Thanks for having this great forum. It was very helpful.Symptom was seat back would not recline when pushing on the seat back icon, but would move to proper position when using the memory buttons. Other functions worked properly so initial assumption was all motors worked properly, nothing physically stuck. After disassembly of the right front door and the the switch unit on a 2002 E320, examination of the circuit board with a loop didn't show any bad joints. So before beginning to re-solder, with everything still disassembled, I just plugged the circuit board back into the door and everything worked! Lesson learned?
Could be just a bit of corrosion on the multi-pin connectors. So next time, before opening up the switch unit, I will try cleaning the contacts on the cables and reconnecting.
Still requires the time consuming removal of the door panel etc. But a positive outcome was achieved without further trauma. Otherwise, I will purchase a new switch unit from Pelican at their very reasonable price.I had also been experiencing intermittent speaker drop-out on that door, so with the panel off, the speaker connector was easy to clean too, which also solved that problem.October 9, 2016Followup from the Pelican Staff: Thanks for the additional info and feedback. It comes with a long red straw that you stick into the nozzle to direct the spray. I turned off the car completely and removed the key so nothing was energized. I squeezed the tip of the nozzle in the crack of the back seat switch and gave it two bursts.
A grey residue seeped out the bottom and looked like fine dust.
